Chapter The gender of nouns

Generally, in English a great number of nouns are neuter, mainly the ones referring to things, animals (with some exceptions) and abstract ideas. They do not take the feminine or the masculine mark and the adjectives or the articles accompanying them do not agree in gender with these nouns.
I have got a black dog.
When is your birthday?
I can play the guitar very well.

Nevertheless, certain nouns have two forms, allowing the distinction between the feminine and the masculine, especially the nouns referring to persons (jobs, family…with exceptions) and to some names of animals.
I have got a sister and two brothers.
My father is an actor and my mother is an actress too.
Look at this cock and that hen over there.
