The adjective as subject complement is always placed after a state verb ( be, seem, stay, remain
). It gives information about the subject of a sentence.
Amy is beautiful.
He looks happy.
They are asleep.
Certain qualitative adjectives (like the former example) can have only the function of subject complement; they cannot be used as epithets.
Here are some examples: asleep, afraid, alone, awake, alive, ...
