Chapter The relative clause

There are two types of relative clauses : the defining relative clause and the non-defining relative clause :
- The defining relative clause is indispensable to the sentence and has a restrictive meaning. It restricts the meaning of the antecedent, not being separated by a comma.
My sister who has a baby asked for you.
I have several sisters, I precise that I refer to the one who has a baby.

- The non-defining relative clause gives further precision but it is not indispensable. It can be suppressed without the loss of meaning of the sentence.
My sister, who has a baby, asked for you.
I have only a sister and I precise that she has a baby but this information is not essential.
